Thursday, January 29, 2026 – The Directorate of Research and Development of BAZNAS RI recently conducted a strategic institutional visit to the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) to enhance the framework of zakat management within both regional government and academic spheres. Led by the Director of Research and Development, Dr. M. Hasbi Zaenal, the delegation engaged in high-level discussions with the Commisioner of BAZNAS DIY and representatives from the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ). A primary objective of this consultation was the deliberation of the "University Zakat Index" pilot project, where BAZNAS DIY is designated to coordinate higher education institutions across the province to ensure systematic data integration for the index.

Furthermore, the meeting involved a comprehensive evaluation of the 2025 National Zakat Index (IZN) for BAZNAS entities throughout the Yogyakarta province. The analysis confirmed that current performance metrics have successfully aligned with the targets established by the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas). Consequently, the dialogue transitioned toward formulating sustainable zakat management strategies and optimizing the distribution of Village Zakat Collection Units (UPZ Desa). This initiative aims to broaden the accessibility of zakat services, ensuring that professional zakat administration effectively penetrates rural administrative levels.

The strategic itinerary continued with a consultative session at the UGM Zakat Collection Unit, focusing on the empirical measurement of the University Zakat Index within the institution. A significant highlight of the discussion was the proposed formalization of the Campus Zakat Management Forum. The objective is to secure official recognition from BAZNAS RI, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.

Through these synergistic efforts between regulatory bodies and academic institutions, the parties aim to solidify the strategic role of zakat within the higher education ecosystem. This initiative represents a critical step toward ensuring that zakat management is not merely an administrative function but a scientifically measured and legally recognized instrument for social welfare and sustainable development in Indonesia.
