- According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of poor people in Indonesia as of March 2024 was 25.22 million. This number decreased by 0.68 million year-on-year and by 1.14 million compared to September 2022.
- Based on the percentage of Indonesia's poor population, the figure was 8.57 percent in September 2024. This figure decreased by 0.46 percentage points compared to March 2024 and by 0.79 percentage points compared to March 2023.
- The function of zakat as an instrument for poverty alleviation has actually become a mandate in Article 3 of Law No. 23 of 2011. In accordance with Article 3b of the law, it is stated that the management of zakat is aimed at realizing community welfare and poverty alleviation.
- Measurement of zakat and poverty alleviation is carried out in the Zakat Impact Assessment survey which is conducted annually to all BAZNAS and LAZ in Indonesia using the Poverty Indicator instrument which is based on five standards, namely the extreme poverty line, poverty line, UMP, had kifayah, and zakat nisab.
- Based on these five standards, by 2024, zakat administrators nationwide had alleviated 1,350,227 people from poverty, 721,748 of whom were from extreme poverty zones. This figure contributed 5.61% to the national poverty alleviation target (September 2024) of 24.06 million people.
- As for poverty alleviation performance based on zakat management leveling, BAZNAS RI has alleviated 80,962 people, BAZNAS Province/District/City has alleviated 492,382 people. Then, LAZ has succeeded in alleviating poverty as many as 913,576 people. BAZNAS calculates zakat performance in alleviating poverty based on five standards: the Extreme Poverty standard, the BPS Poverty standard, the UMP standard, the Had Kifayah standard and the Nishab standard of zakat.
